Changemakers | One Brick

A couple years ago, I decided that I wanted to do more meaningful things with my life…with my time. One way was through volunteering. I searched and searched the internet until I came across my volunteering match made in heaven…ONE BRICK!!!!! Their slogan is “Volunteering Made Easy” and that is the truth. They are a non-profit organization that acts as the “middleman” between volunteers and other non-profit organizations…a community service broker of sorts lol.

The issue I had when I first started looking for places to volunteer was the commitment level some required. I can’t promise you every single Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. I wanted to find an organization where I could just come in when I was able to come in. One Brick made that easy. All I had to do was register, go to their DC calendar on their website, and then sign up for whatever event I found interesting. Simple right? They also add a social element to their volunteering by going out to eat after their events, giving volunteers the opportunity to get to know one another…by choice, not by force lol.

One Brick partners with many awesome organizations. They are how I learned about one of my favorite organizations, DC Central Kitchen :). I started volunteering through One Brick in 2009 and since then, I have done all kinds of things like landscaping…I planted trees yall. That is HARD work. I give props to anyone that has made a career out of it lol. I’ve packed up books for prisoners and responded to the letters they wrote, worked at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, prepared meals for the homeless, worked at the National Air & Space Museum for Family Day, and helped paint some walls to name a few. They have something for just about everyone.

Their events are a lot of fun. If you are looking to volunteer more, definitely check out their website. They have chapters in several locations across the nation from DC, to Boston, to Indianapolis, to Seattle and then some. Visit One Brick for more info!
